We understand there is a new trend for flat plate bolt-together rack setups. Those kits admittedly look very pretty, stylish. The simple fact is that those side plates with extruded aluminum spars in between, are far weaker in dynamic load carrying situations (offroad). The aluminum can and does fracture. The small metal screws that tap into the aluminum extrusions and hold to the flat side rails, can work loose inside the soft aluminum.
Those pretty flat panel racks have strength ratings far below that of our welded steel tube rack system. If you’re looking for something that can hold an RTT, fuel, water, spare tire, heavy equipment on top, and do it reliably in rough overlanding situations, the Rocky Road kit is simply the very strongest and utilitarian on the market.

As for owners of 2008 and newer models, you may have discovered your spare tire sits underneath your Jeep. What’s up with having the tire down there anyway? On the trail it can hang up on rocks or other trail hazards.

Plus, if you had a day like we had Fall 2008 deep in the backcountry of Southern Utah in one of our company vehicles… we flatted a front tire on the trail and when we went to mount the spare, it had a leak from previously dragging over some sharp object on the trail. Fortunately, we were equipped with pump and tire plugs to get ourselves home.
Point being… its not the best idea for a trail rig to have the spare tire (your getcha home insurance) be a bumper-plate on the back of, or underneath your Jeep. Perhaps more important though for KK owners who lift their Jeeps, you can not fit an oversized spare underneath in the factory mounting location. It just doesn’t fit! Our Adventure rack offers the perfect tire carrying solution.
For KJ owners, the tire rack can make sense as well if you want to get the tire off your tailgate for a better rear view, or maybe to keep the stress off the tire mounting on the tailgate to eliminate squeaks.

This incredibly strong rack mounts to the Rocky Road roof rails very easily. All bolton, no cutting, drilling, or other modification needed. Mounts tight and secure for the most rugged on and offroad use. Perfect for the ultimate world safari expedition, or for just traveling around town.
While we were at designing the best on the planet for your Jeep, we added some additional optional features as well.
- The spare tire mount. Our kit uses a cool prerunner style mount with an easy to use T-handle for tightening and securing.
- You can pack along extra items such as an axe, shovel, axe and shovel. Carry anything else with a similar handle using our accessory mount.
- The HiLift jack mount gives you a nice secure place to store this essential offroad tool. We use an official HiLift jack mount kit which allows you to lock your jack into place. Holds jacks up to 60″ if you wish.
- Our forward light mount gives you a great place to mount auxiliary offroad lights. Our mount puts them up high to rid that hood glare from lower mounted lights. Our light bars come with 3 or 4 light positions. Use the center mount for other items such as a CB antenna. Can also be mounted on the rear of the rack as well.
- Fuel or water carriers are a great item to have along for a weekend adventure, or your dream overlanding trip. Our racks allow an assortment of fuel or water cans to be used. The single can carrier kit holds 2 containers.
